The mysterious DROID Fighter has popped up on a few internal Verizon documents for the last few weeks, but until now we had no idea what it was – no specs, no date, not even a manufacturer. All of a sudden we’ve got a bevvy of information all at once, and what it boils down to is a slightly upgraded version of the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX with possible Ice Cream Sandwich implications. The photo below was spotted by PhoneHK, with the phone on the left being the new DROID Fighter and the one on the right being the Motorola RAZR. See if you can spot the family resemblance.
You’ll immediately notice that the purported Fighter has an even larger screen, given by the source as 4.6 inches. This is achieved with a slightly larger body (though not that much larger – the RAZR has a pretty big bezel) and the absence of physical navigation keys, Galaxy Nexus-style. That implies that the Fighter may be running Ice Cream Sandwich at launch. Aside from a vaguely “high definition screen” (probably 720p) and a MAXX-matching 3300mAh battery, there’s no other hard details.
The last time we saw the DROID Fighter’s name it was slated for an April 12th date, though whether that’s a testing schedule, announcement or release date isn’t currently known. None of this has been confirmed, of course, but with Moto’s heavy use of Verizon’s DROID line and the other hints we’ve seen, the hardware at least looks to be real. There’s no telling how yet another RAZR variant will affect Verizon’s lineup, even without the iconic name tagging along with it – it’s been less than two months since the last one, after all. If Motorola releases a tweaked version of the MAXX with ICe Cream Sandwich six months or more before the DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX are slated to get the upgrade, current owners won’t be happy.

There’s a whole new Motorola RAZR in town, and those of you that’ve already picked up the old one should know this: the release date has been tipped to us for the RAZR MAXX to be the 26th of January, 2012. This sits well with the perhaps accidentally dropped date (also the 26th shown on the Motorola site earlier this week (and subsequently taken down), this leading us to believe that, barring any newly discovered mishaps before then, we can expect a bigger and bolder RAZR in our very near future.

This device is a dual-core “RAZR thin” 4G LTE Android device being carried by Verizon and its release has come so close to the release of the original DROID RAZR that it’s almost as if they realized that the battery was too small and didn’t have time to change it in the first place. That or it just made more sense to release one of the world’s thinnest smartphones in its original ultra-thin form factor first to gain some press attention that it otherwise may note have gotten, then essentially silently release the MAXX which is the same, but a bit thicker because of its bigger battery.
Either way, it’s happening, and we’ve got a hands-on look with the device so that you can tell how nice it looks whilst held in a hand. This device was released alongside the DROID 4 as well, if you did not know, and we’ve got a hands-on experience of that for you now as well. These devices were released at CES 2012, and we got a chance to look at them inside Pepcom.
The Motorola Droid 4 (XT894) has recently received its DLNA certification which one, lets us know it has DLNA functionality but more importantly, it gives us another clue that a Verizon launch will soon be upon us. Word on the street is the device could hit as early as February 2nd but no one can be sure at this point. We’re hoping Verizon and/or Motorola will have the device on display for CES where we can get our grubby little hands all over it. Stay tuned!

There is still a very strong OG DROID following over on XDA, and we should certainly see these security patches incorporated into some custom ROMs soon. For those still running stock however, click here to download the FRK76 security update. To install this be sure to rename the download to “update.zip” and place it on the root of your SD card. After powering down your DROID, reboot into recovery (by holding down the X and Power buttons). You should then select “Apply update.zip from SD Card”.
You should then be good to go! But lets be honest, if you haven’t rooted your device and are not yet running CyanogenMod 7, at least give it a chance! It’s easy and will definitely give your OG DROID the pep in its step that should have been there all along.
